Showcasing innovative steel design for Pick ‘n Pay.
The 165 000m² structure includes an ambient environment building (dry goods) of 94 000m², a cold storage building (perishables) of 46 000m² and a returnable goods and reusable transit packaging building (RRU) of 25 000m².
Structurally, the main structural frame is a double portal system where trusses and lattice girders were designed as part of portal frames to provide stability in two directions. The roof design features a distinctive curved profile with a radius of approximately 600 metres. This unique curvature required the use of the ‘sky-forming’ method to roll and shape the roofing sheets accurately.
The roof sheets were sky-formed by Macsteel to 280m long using 0,5mm G550 Az100 Colorplus® Sea Spray. The main roof has a dimension of 160 000m2 and used around 860 tonnes of Colorplus®.
For the side-cladding of the new building, 40 000m2 of 0,47mm G550 AZ100 Colorplus® matt. was rolled-formed into the IBR 0,47mm G550 AZ100 Colorplus® matt. The weight of this cladding material is 200 tonnes”.
The choice of colour is also significant, since Colorplus® in colour Sea Spray matt offers one of the most favourable solar reflective index options, at a value of 78, meaning that the roof “runs cooler” under the harsh Highveld sun. and 78% of the inbound solar/infrared is either reflected directly or emitted compared with the standard white used in the evaluation.
