Premium distribution centre for leading SA safety equipment company at Cornubia Ridge – uses Colorplus® Textured.
A recently occupied distribution centre/mixed office space project within a premium logistics park development by Fortress Real Estate Investments, close to the coast just north of Durban showcases how modern, durable aluminum-zinc coated steel roofing and cladding can be used to create a modern building both attractive-looking, long lasting and highly functional from an architectural perspective.
Brandon du Plessis, the senior branch manager at Macsteel in KZN says that his company conducted their unique “Sky Forming” process for the roof at the recently completed Dromex Distribution Centre located within Cornubia Ridge Logistics Park off the N2 near uMhlanga, KZN,
“We supplied Chartwell Roofing on this project, the roofing contractors. Main contractor was Abbeydale Construction. In total the project used 35 000m2 of Colorplus® in AZ200. For the roof itself the specified roofing profile was Novotexi 440, our Macsteel concealed fix product. The magic in the story comes from our production method, whereby the sheets were rolled on site directly onto the roof using our ground-breaking Sky Forming process.”
Indeed, the same methodology by Macsteel debuted at another one of Safal Steel’s showcase projects, the large Pick n Pay Eastport Logistics Park near OT International Airport, where the actual roll forming equipment is located in a container suspended above the roof.
The magic is in the texture
From a Safal Steel perspective, an interesting feature of this project was the use of our Colorplus® AZ200 product in paint system Thunderstorm and Seaspray Textured.
This coating variant was specially developed with the inspired architect in mind, this paint system adds a slightly granular appearance to our Colorplus® pre-painted aluminium-zinc coated steel technology. Textured offers a substantially different effect to the conventional flat finish, making it particularly attractive for roof sheeting. Alternative applications have in fact included interior cladding.
Colorplus® Textured is suitable for all roofing profiles – concealed fix, tile-profiled sheeting and corrugated. It offers a number of benefits, notably retaining its colour integrity and reducing dust retention. Its inherent strength imparted by the steel also reduces the impact of hail and high winds, further reducing maintenance costs over the service life of the roof.
Adding further aesthetic appeal to Dromex’s new building, sidewall cladding was also in AZ200 Thunderstorm and Seaspray Textured, profiled in IBR pierced fix, alternated with standard gloss Colorplus® AZ200. A total of 8 500m2 of the total 35 000 m2 of Colorplus® supplied on this project was used for this cladding, according to Du Plessis.
Dromex marketing manager, Lyndall Farrer says that the company is the largest Africa’s leading wholesaler of industrial PPE and workwear says” The new building, which we occupied from April 2024, accommodates our new head office, also warehousing and distributing our safety wear locally and internationally. The office space, although small in comparison to the warehouse, is very spacious and beautifully designed; and has been comfortable through the seasons thus far”.
Under the skin, Safal Steel’s Colorplus® Textured, as used on this leading project, retains the tried and tested 55% aluminium-zinc coating technology made locally under international licence.
Textured is available in three different colours. We recommend you use the colours available to ramp up aesthetic appeal, but also functionally to increase solar reflection. Tests have proven that based on the colour spectrum, light colours offer a higher reflectance than dark colours. Our custom-made paint system enhances this property. Seaspray as a colour is an outstanding example of this feature.
Colorplus® Textured is 100% proudly South African, made at Safal Steel’s plant in KwaZulu-Natal.
