The Start of Safal Steel

Safal Steel forms part of the Safal Group of companies. The Group opened its first factory in Mombasa, Kenya in 1962.

After restructuring the many companies into the single holding company in 2003, the Group has grown into the powerhouse it is today.

Presently, the Safal Group continues to manufacture a wide range of premier building systems and solutions for the ever-growing construction markets of Africa.

1962

Mabati Rolling Mills Limited (MRM) Founded

Mabati Rolling Mills Limited (MRM) is the largest company within the Safal Group, and was its founding operation, commencing in 1962 at Mariakani, near Mombasa Kenya.

1995

Safal Investments (Mauritius) Ltd is established

Safal Investments (Mauritius) Ltd was formed, operating under the name Safal Group.

2001

Mariakani, Mombasa

MRM commissioned the first African aluminium-zinc metal coating line in Mariakani, Mombasa.

2003

New Factory Founded

All operating companies, throughout Eastern, Central and Southern Africa are restructured into the holding company, known as the Safal Group.

2008

Aluminium-zinc coated steel coils in Southern Africa

Safal Steel Pty Ltd launched the first locally produced aluminium-zinc coated steel coils in Southern Africa.

With our factory in KZN, Safal Steel is the single largest investment for the Safal Group.

Steel’s most valuable property is its ability to be recycled many times without any loss to its inherent qualities. On its journey of reincarnation from washing machines to cars, oil cans to ocean liners or railway tracks, steel saves precious raw materials and minimises energy consumption. With global recovery rates averaging more than 83%, steel is one of the most sustainable and environmentally important products made.

All steel created, up to as long as 150 years ago, can be recycled and repurposed into new products. Steel is one of the most innovative, recyclable and sustainable materials of the 21st Century.
